In 2011 Hydroaid was granted the special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC). This was an important recognition of the contribution brought by Hydroaid to the international cooperazion framework. As a consultative member, Hydroaid is entitled to take part in periodical consultations on specific topics related to sustainable development.

Since 2012 Hydroaid contributes to the work of ECOSOC with the submisson of written statements. All approved contributions by Hydroaid and registered organizazions are published and distributed in the occasion of the related initiatives, as well as via the online portal United Nations Documents Archive.
One of the contributions presented by Hydroaid in 2013 was selected for an oral presentation at the ECOSOC High Level Segment in Geneva. Besides remarking the high quality of the efforts accomplished, this was an opportunity for the Association to take part more actively in the shared commitments with ECOSOC.

Established in 1945, the United Nations Economic and Social Council is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. It operates as a platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.
The General Assembly Resolution 68/1 have strengthened ECOSOC’s leading role in identifying emerging challenges, promoting innovation and achieving a balanced integration of the three pillars of sustainable development, economic, social and environmental. ECOSOC pays special attention to follow-up on major UN conferences and summits. Its work builds on the coordination between UN entities and policy makers, members of national assemblies, academics, experts, civil society organizations, foundations, private companies, youth and registered organizations.
